Why should surveillance cameras be used in preschools?

As a preschool teacher, who has worked in centers both with cameras and without, I have vowed to never work in a center that does not have cameras ever again. Other posters have mentioned that if there are no camreas children are more likley to be abused (which is 100% true) but so far no one has mentioned center accountability.

Number one thing I have learned in life: trust, but verify. Camreas help parents verify.

The first center I “worked at” when I was 19 had no cameras. (it was a short lived internship for college) It was an absolutely terrible Experience for everyone involved. Children slept 2inches apart at nap time (Florida DCF standards state 16 inches on all sides), most siblings shared a nap time mat, and the air was turned off to save money. Parents were told that each child had plenty of space and that they all slept through nap time every day, even though the heat made it too hard for the kids to sleep. Sometimes, the teachers would came to work intoxicated visibly stumbling through the front door. Some even went to bars on their lunch breaks and ate wings to cover the scent (they told me the director knew, but didnt care and once I turned 21 I would understand). The director, who promised the parents she was always there, would leave the center regularly to shuttle kids from the center to elementary school and back at the end of the day. (She needed money, so she did not have a permit and used her personal vehicle.). Parents of infants and toddlers were unaware that school age children were also there (sometimes unsupervised with the little ones) as the center was only certified for 6mos-4yrs. Why do cameras matter? Because if parents could see any of this, the center would have been shut down much sooner than it was. If parents could have seen this, their children would not have been abused and neglected. If parents knew what really happened there, as opposed to that of the “professionals” they trusted, they would have found a safer place for their babies. The director could not be held accountable for her immorral and illegal behavior, so she did whatever she wanted.

Note to add that on my first day I questioned the director about the sleeping arrangements and I was told to know my place. The second day I asked if it was procedure to work with children while drunk, and told the director i was going to need to report this to my professor. I was told that if I speak to anyone I was never welcome back. I detailed everything to my instructor, who reported the center, and never returned. A few months later it shut down. I would like to think it was investigated and permanently closed, but I think the “director” just ran out of money.

A second center (no cameras) that I interned at wasn't that bad, however during nap time teachers would leave the building to smoke and everyone was on their cell phones all day long. Parents were told that children were learing, but the teachers fabricated kids work and put all of the students in front of the television for 6 hours a day. Again, parents had no way of knowing what was happening so they believed the “professionals”. I was at that center two hours a day, three days a week for four weeks and every day was about the same. Oh- and no visitors were allowed, and no early pickups.

The center I work at now has cameras. We are always in ratio. Safety standards are followed. If a parent sees something they don't like on the cameras, they can call and talk to the director or the teacher directly. Yes, it can get annoying listening to management complain about ‘picky parents’, but you know what? They are trusting us to care for their children, and paying well to do so. We just lost one teacher for losing her temper and hurting a child. Fortunately, that child was old enough to talk so he could say exactly why his face was bleeding and have the cameras verify the story. Some children in preschool/daycare are so young they cannot speak. The teacher gets to tell the story of the bumps or scrapes. In this center, we are required to write accident/incident reports with the time on them. This way, parents can see the video footage of exactly how their child got hurt. It keeps abuse low, enrollment high, kids safe, and parents happy.

NOTE TO PARENTS: If your child is in a center that does not have cameras, try to show up unannounced every now and then to make sure things are going okay and are up to par. I'm sure not all centers are as bad as my first two examples, but bad centers and bad people do exist.

How many CCTV cameras do we have?

It is hard for me to see this question and look away. I will try as much as I can to put down meaningful information regarding your question.
CCTV cameras can be classified into:
  1. Outdoor Cameras: they are designed to be used outside, they have specific temperature rating. They can’t be affected by rain, sun, dust or any form of humidity.
  2. Indoor Cameras: it is designed to be used inside. It will get damaged when used for outdoor application. Most of the indoor cameras are designed to have a vent to allow heat dissipation during operation which is it will be very difficult to use it as outdoor camera.
There are many types of security cameras:
  • Bullet camera took its name from the long bullet-like shape
Bullet camera can also be used indoor if you don’t mind the aesthetic.
  • Dome camera took its name from the name “dome” which has a round with curve shape.
  • Vandal-proof dome/bullet camera is similar to that of normal bullet/dome camera but has a rugged housing which is built to withstand an impact or damage
  • IP camera: Unlike analog camera, IP camera uses network protocol to work. They have their own web server. They can also work as standalone device. They can be configured to record to an NVR, FTP site, cloud storage or free third party file storage if done properly.
  • Hidden/Covert/Spy cameras are the types of cameras that are concealed in other objects to record you secretly without your consent. They can be found in clock, pen, women bag and etc.
  • Turret camera is another version of dome camera with a more advanced infrared LED which is called SMD (Surfaced Mount Device)
  • PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) camera is a camera that can revolve horizontally, vertically and also zoom. PTZ eliminates blind spot which a fixed lens camera wouldn’t capture.
  • Speed Dome camera is an advanced PTZ. This camera has a more speed than a normal PTZ. This camera is suitable when you are tracking or tailing a faster object.
  • Varifocal camera is a camera that does not use a fixed lens, For instance, if a camera is label as focal length = 3.6mm, that shows that it is a fixed lens and the focal length can’t be adjusted. A varifocal lens allows you to adjust the focal length from the lowest to the highest value. Such cameras allow you to easily zoom on object. Varifocal lens can either be manual or motorized. Varifocal camera has a similar look to other regular fixed lens cameras.
  • LPR (License Plate Recognition) cameras are used in traffic to capture license plates of vehicles in motion clear enough for humans and machines to recognize. LPR camera uses advanced technology which eliminates focus problem unlike the regular cameras. LPR cameras mostly come in bullet style.
  • Miniature camera is a small square shape camera used where a regular camera can’t fit in. This is also an effective camera with the same features found on the bigger ones.
  • Box camera is a type of camera that allows you to choose your own suitable lens, you could choose wide or narrow lens according to your project. Box camera must be placed in a camera housing if it’s going to be used outdoor. You have to buy every parts from box camera, lens, housing, and the wall mount. When buying a camera housing, it is advisable to buy the one with heater and blower. This will help the camera to withstand humidity.
  • WiFi cameras are cameras that do not rely on cable connection except for the power which you have to connect the power adapter. They stream video directly to the mobile app, cloud or ftp site if done properly. Some wireless cameras have the option to use a solar panel or even work on a built-in battery.
  • Smart cameras are intelligent cameras that respond to request from users. These types of cameras have advance functions more than the normal security camera. Smart cameras can either be wired or wireless.

What screen size should I use for 8 cctv cameras?

1. LCD PANEL IS VERY IMPORTANT

In security monitor, the quality of LCD panel determines the video brightness, contrast, clarity etc. Besides, its mass production, market trend and other many aspects will affect the quality. So that, when we choose the monitor, we suggest you to choose well-known brand products, these products come with mature technology and high quality. Currently, the quality of LCD panel can be classified with ABC three different grade, although there is no mandatory regulation, commonly LCD panels only have maximum 1 pixel defect are A grade, while C grade panels have more than 3 pixel defects. Rarely manufacturers can produce LCD panels have no pixel defect, therefore, if consumers buy the LCD monitors, you must carefully inspect product's image quality, especially those products claimed to have A+ grade.

2. MONITORS VIDEO ASPECT RATIO

Now, similar to television, monitor screen size also have many types. The regular screen size including 17", 19", 20", 32", 42" and larger screen size. The video aspect ratio includes 16:9, 4:3, or 5:4 etc. Perhaps some users may think the aspect ratio is only related to users' customs. However, similar to security monitor, the front-end security cameras also have fixed aspect ratio. If the video aspect ratio of front-end and back-end equipment is mismatch, image distortion will appear, consequently, impacts the performance of video monitoring. Although there are many kinds of aspect ratio types, 16:9 is the widely used aspect ratio for the most security cameras. Similar to 720p*1080i high definition network cameras, basically adopt 16:9 format. From long-term perspective, 16:9 has the great possibility to become the major aspect ratio in the future. When we choose equipment, 16:9 aspect ratio should be specially noticed.

3 CONSIDER THE IMAGING PERFORMANCE

In our previous buying security camera, we commonly recommend users to inspect the real result before making the decision. It's the same to security monitor. However, comparison is easy, but in real operation and inspection, what should we focus?

4. RESOLUTION

Concerning to the selection of resolution, we still take 16:9 monitor as the example. Today, this wide screen LCD physic resolution is 1368*768. To this parameter, we can use signal generator to input resolution text signal, then inspect the displayed resolution TV lines, hence we can know why the quality complies the requirement. A 1080P monitor can display 1,920 pixels across the width of the screen, and 1,080 pixels from top to bottom. The higher the resolution, the more information can be displayed on the screen. Additionally, we can make the security camera aim at high-speed running subject, so that we can know the security monitor's response speed, check if it will encounter motion blur problem.

5. RESPONSE TIME

In terms of pixel response time, we can check the current average response time. Today, pixel response time becomes the product highlight to more and more monitor manufacturers. During security camera working, if want to achieve ideal video surveillance effect, without 60 frame per second response time is hard to achieve. Well, achieving this speed, the pixel response time should be within 16ms. However, the response time of major monitors basically reach 8ms, therefore can meet the high-speed 125 fps requirement. Actually, to residential and small business users, 12ms or 16ms products are enough. Monitors with a fast 1-millisecond (gray-to-gray) pixel response are very good for gaming, but even monitors with a higher pixel response, like the Acer B276HUL (6 milliseconds, gray-to-gray), can display games without much blurring or ghosting. The fact is, most users won't notice lag, which is the time it takes for the display to react to a command, but hardcore gamer consider this a key factor when choosing a monitor and typically seek out the fastest models available.

6. BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST

When we choose the security monitor, we regularly see brightness and contract options. What are these two parameters about? Typically, LCD monitor has higher brightness, the color is more vivid, the real performance is better. For those low brightness products, displayed image will become darker, thereby increasing the fatigue of the user. At present, a regular monitor brightness is approximate 250cd/㎡, too bright and too dark will impact on imaging performance. After discussing the brightness, now we are discussing the contrast, regularly, LCD monitor's contrast is 3000:1, the conventional CRT monitors have lower contrast. However, as the video surveillance monitor, 400:1 is the lowest required level, when contrast is below 300:1, then you can ignore it.

7. VIEWING ANGLE

For conventional CRT monitor you don't need to take visual angle fact. Since LCD monitor uses different imaging technology, screen color will change when users view from different angle. In fast, the viewing angle can be divided into horizontal angle and vertical angle. When choosing a monitor, a wide viewing angle monitor is the best choice. 8 The stability of monitor When it comes to stability, this is the major concern for everyone when choosing a monitor, however, it's also the most frustrating thing. Basically, you can't know the stability when you "see" the product. But you still can inspect some small detailed design to extend the lifespan time, such as the previous mentioned defect parameter, or if utilizes anti-interference product housing, good heat-dissipation design, as well as advanced heat-dissipation fan and temperature control etc. Moreover, the adopted imaging technology can also be used as the reference.

Analog Security Cameras vs Digital IP Security Cameras

Security cameras come in two distinct types, Digital(IP) and Analog(AHD, TVL, TVI, HD-SDI, HD-CVI). Many types of these security cameras are still widely in use. However the security camera industry continues to push the limits of resolutions and as a result, the use of digital IP security equipment continues to increase while analog continues to decline. Let’s take a look at the general differences in analog surveillance cameras and IP surveillance cameras.

RJ-59 Cable Ends-Security Camera

Analog Security Cameras

1. Analog cameras send a video signal to an encoder(DVR) which then processes the signal and records it.
2. Analog cameras require a direct connection to the DVR.
3. Analog security cameras require two cables, one for power and one for video.
4. Analog cameras have a limited platform of resolutions available.

Cat5e and Cat6 can be used for IP cameras

IP Security Cameras

1. IP Cameras encode the video signal at the camera and send the video to Network Video Recorder(NVR) through internet protocol(IP).

2. IP cameras require a connection to the same network as the NVR, and doesn’t have to be directly connected to the recorder.

3. IP Security cameras use Power over Ethernet(PoE) which means you only have one cable going to the camera that supplies power and transfers video.

4.The worst IP camera resolutions are far superior to the best analog resolutions.
